Cinco De Mayo Another Good Reason To Enjoy Avocados
Thursday, April 25th 2013 Toronto, Ontario – Cinco de Mayo (May 5th) is a cultural occasion in which Canadians can sink their teeth and celebrate their love for avocados. Although Canada’s Latin American population is small (360, 2351 people), Mexico’s influence in the lives of Canadians is significant. Mexico ranks as the second most visited travel destination by Canadians every year2 and the leading exporter of avocados to Canada. In 2012, Canada imported 39,048,779 KGM of avocados from Mexico, valued at more than CAD $97 million3.
On May 5th, when many parts of the world are partaking in Cinco de Mayo festivities to commemorate the Mexican army’s victory over the French during the battle of Puebla in 1862, Canadians can create their own culinary celebrations with the following newly developed recipes. Truly befitting any spring or summer occasion, these recipes highlight the versatility of Mexican avocados:

A traditional Mexican sandwich layered with a delicious zesty chicken, creamy cheese spread, crunchy cabbage slaw and sliced avocados from Mexico.

Easy-to-make shrimp cakes that marry flavours from the East and the West with a Mexican topping of avocado and mango salsa, to create the perfect hors d’oeuvre for spring and summer entertaining.

This gluten and dairy-free, wholesome salad combines Kasha with nutrient – dense avocados from Mexico and sweet potato.

Suitable for gluten-free, vegan and raw diets, these ‘faux’ mini cheesecakes offer a creamy texture that is derived from Mexican avocados instead of dairy, and naturally sweetened with strawberry and coconut.
Mexico is recognized as the world’s first avocado growing region. Its unique growing environment, thanks to the area’s rich volcanic soil, semitropical temperatures and perfect combination of sun and rain, produce a superior tasting avocado. The country’s avocado trees bloom four times per year, allowing for consistent quality in the marketplace.
Avocados are nutrient dense containing nearly 20 essential nutrients and several antioxidants known to have disease-fighting properties. Their “good” fat content makes them an excellent choice for use in a variety of meal items. They are an excellent choice for inclusion in calorie-restricted diets since foods that contain more fat are digested at a slower pace, thus delaying the onset of hunger. Avocados can also be used instead of dairy and lactose based ingredients and are gluten free. The combination of these factors put this fruit, high on the list of foods that contribute to a healthful diet for adults and children.
